Consul General of Sri Lanka meets Chief Minister of Maharashtra

The Consul General of Sri Lanka, Saroja Sirisena called on Shri Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra at his official residence Varsha Bungalow on 26 August 2015.

The meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere and the Chief Minister appreciated the interest taken by Sri Lanka in the State of Maharashtra.

The Chief Minister highlighted the traditional bonds of friendship between Sri Lanka and Maharashtra with special mention to the state’s Buddhist population and Buddhist sites. The Chief Minister also holds the portfolio of tourism in the state and expressed interest in promoting both inbound and outbound tourism. He requested cooperation in dealing with the Elephant crisis that is taking place in the city due to urbanization.

The Consul General acknowledged that, Maharashtra has the highest per capita income in India and also is the most industrialized and progressive state of the country, hence, is also home to a large proportion of India’s growing middle class. It is therefore, best poised to purchase Sri Lanka’s highend exports and also to contribute to the island’s inbound tourism market.
